Another Five Miles: The Taper Seems To Be Working

Popped out lunchtime for another five mile run, and I’m happy to report my legs are starting to feel rested and ready to race. Of course this will probably come back to haunt me and I’ll wish I hadn’t said anything, but nothing wrong with being honest eh?

I also wanted to try out a clip on gel flask holder to carry my race day Perpetuem, but I abandoned the idea after just a quarter mile with the flask bouncing up and down and cutting in to my lower back. Oh well, I’ll settle for the hand held option instead, which is probably a smarter idea anyway – I won’t have to struggle unclipping and clipping the flask back on to my shorts.

flask.jpgI plan on carrying 4 scoops of Perpetuem in a flask, mixed with just enough water to make a thick paste. 4 scoops of Perpetuem will provide a whopping 520 calories and is equivalent to carrying 5 or 6 energy gels! Hopefully the fuel will work just as well in the marathon as it has on the 3 or 4 training runs I tried it. We’ll see on Sunday I guess.

Anyway, back to today’s run – nothing spectacular, just a good old easy five miles. First mile 7:31 followed by a 6:58 second mile. At this point I slowed things down and ran quite consistently for the remaining 3 miles – 7:09, 7:03, 7:12 – to finish with an average 7:10 pace.

Looking at my online running log I’m happy to see I ran 200 miles for the month of April (despite taking 4 days off for a trip to Vegas), and hope to keep the steady mileage going throughout May. Also, so far this year I’ve logged 96 hours of running, which amazingly enough is equal to a whole four days!

    i feel like a snail compared to you! =) i did run 3 today, but at a more moderate average 10 min mile pace =)

  2. Blaine: hope the cough clears up once and for all pretty soon. I’m sure May will be a lighter month for me in terms of mileage. I’ll be recovering from Frederick next week and then my family will be visiting for a couple of weeks – perfect opportunity to recharge my batteries.
