Just A Run

Tonight there was no Garmin GPS and no Polar stopwatch; it was just an easy five mile run.

I’ve been digesting my McMillan marathon training plan and one of the key concepts is the following:

Stress a muscle or energy system and it will adapt to a higher functional level. But the key factor that many athletes miss is that the adaptation does not occur during the stressful workouts. It occurs during the rest/recovery periods.

Most people who know me will tell you, I don’t run easy very often, but it’s clear from this program that to be successful at the Richmond Marathon in November I’ll need to make the most of my rest/recovery periods.

Lesson learned, time to put it into action. Tonight was the first easy run of the summer, and it felt great!

I love it, only a true runner will call a 5 miles run, an easy run. I so can not wait to get back to that point. Thanks for sharing, keep up the great work.

Thanks for the comment Dag. It was really refreshing to just get outside and run. So many times I’ll put myself under unnecessary pressure by racing the clock…I need to learn to back off on my easy days.

Think I would know better after 25 years running wouldn’t you?!

The day you stop learning is a sad day! :)

Nice run.. I have done this a few times, but I always go back to the watch. Refreshing for a day, but I run for the stats. :)

Not only is rest important, but so is what you eat and when you eat it. If your body doesn’t have the basic elements it needs to make adaptations, then you aren’t going to get much benefit from your workout.

Alltop. I don't know how I got there either.
