The wait is finally over as today I finally received word of my official 2009 London Marathon rejection. The email from Race Director Dave Bedford was short and straight to the point:

We regret that we have to advise you that your application to run in the 2009 Flora London Marathon has not been successful due to massive over-subscription.

Easy as that…but at least now I can start thinking about other plans for the 2009 marathon season.

Did anyone else get in using the Overseas Ballot? Seems like the running forums are flooded with people who didn’t get in, but I haven’t read one message from someone who was actually accepted. Good luck to you all….

I’ve run London twice before (’92 and ’96) and have wanted to go back to race it again for quite some time. I called my wife Ally at work, asked if she was interested and before I knew it had entered both of us for the event. There’s no guarantee either of us will be accepted into the race (we were rejected a few years back for reasons unknown), but it’s definitely worth a shot. What’s more, London will only charge our credit card if we’re accepted, so there’s really nothing to lose.

According to the web site we’ll find out in early October if we’re in or not. Could be a great Spring trip to start planning for! Fingers crossed….

Last month I posted about the World’s Oldest Competitive Runner and ‘Buster’ Martin’s amazing 5 hour half marathon.

Well, this past Sunday, ‘Buster’ crossed the finish line at the London Marathon in a little over 10 hours – another amazing feat by the 101 year old from London. However, his claim to be the oldest man to complete the 26-mile route is now in doubt after it emerged he may not be quite as advanced in age as he has claimed.

Buster – real name Pierre Jean Martin – reportedly told NHS staff that he was born on September 1, 1913, not 1906, as had been previously claimed and the bizarre dispute blew up after Guinness World Records refused to back up his impressive feat.

An official spokeswoman has confirmed he will not be entered into the Guinness Book of Records because it is impossible to verify his age.

‘Buster’ insists the marathon was never about a world record and his intention was to raise a large sum of money for charity. I say, whether Buster is 94 or 104, what a great effort and what a great guy! My favorite part of the whole story? ‘Buster’ stopped at the halfway mark for a pint of beer and a cigarette to help him on his way? I wonder if there will be a beer stop at the Frederick Marathon on May 4th? If it’s good enough for ‘Buster’, it’s good enough for me….

World marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe withdrew from the London Marathon on Thursday because of a toe tendon injury, but is still expected to recover in time for this August’s Beijing Olympics.

Radcliffe said:

I am desperately disappointed that I have to pull out of this year’s race.

I love running in London and this race would have been the perfect test for me before the Olympic Games.

After injuring her right toe while altitude training at her base in Albuquerque, N.M., Radcliffe said:

In marathon training there are no short cuts and there is simply not enough time to be in the shape I want to be in to run well in London. Now I must concentrate on being as well prepared as possible for Beijing.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. I know Paula is desperate to make up for dropping out of the marathon at the 2004 Athens Games, despite winning gold at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland a year later.
