Started the week at 200 miles for the month of January, and hopeful of getting close to my all-time monthly high of 266 miles. With a 25k race lined up for Saturday 30th and another long run opportunity on Sunday 31st, I felt pretty confident I’d get there. Here’s how the week went:

Monday: Nice gentle eight mile recovery run that took about one hour. I’m trying to get my feet used to a fairly new pair of Adidas Supernova Glide, but they felt clunky and very stiff. Wondering if brand name shoes purchased at Outlet Malls (in this case the Adidas Outlet Mall in Williamsburg, VA) would be any different to the same model shoe that specialty running stores carry? Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Tuesday: Runervals Up, Up & Up Hill Climber DVD — here we go again. Not getting any easier and I struggled a bit with the 10, 11 and 12% at the end. Still a great workout though, and I’m hoping all this quad burn will pay dividends at the HAT Run 50k on March 20th.

Wednesday: News starting to break about a possible/probably snow storm heading our way for the weekend, so decided to go semi-long in the hope of banking a few extra miles. So, my planned ten miler turned into a thirteen miler but it actually went very well. Legs were initially a bit tired from Tuesday’s hill workout, but thankfully they soon warmed up to the task.

Splits: 8:00 7:20 7:22 7:22 7:18 7:12 7:18 7:07 7:04 7:00 6:54 6:44 6:30

Nice to have temps in high 30s with little to no wind. Perfect for a shorts, long sleeve & gloves run.

Thursday: Just an easy eight miles. Not a very exciting treadmill run, but always good to watch some old Tour de France classics on DVD.

Friday: Started the day with a hurried five miles before work. It was very cold and windy out, so nice to get back inside to warm up. Highlight of the day, however, was probably picking up my new Brooks Green Silence from Running Etc.

This brand new model from Brooks is unique in that each and every part of the shoe has a sustainable element, including soy-based inks and recycled materials. The color may not be green, but you’ll definitely make an eco-statement with the Brooks Green Silence racing flat! At just under 7 ounces for my men’s size 9.5, it should be pretty speedy too.

As you can imagine, I couldn’t wait to finish work to try out the Green Silence, and managed to sneak in a quick four miles before darkness set in.

Splits: 6:42, 6:32, 6:31, 6:06

Initial impressions are great. The shoe is light, springy and responsive and feels a lot like a minimalistic Brooks Launch (another favorite of mine). The off center lacing is a bit funky, but I didn’t have any issues with keeping them snug. Looking forward to seeing how these work out for me.

Saturday: Well, the predicted snow storm arrived and the 25k Distance Series race was cancelled. Good call by the race director — it would have been virtually impossible to get to Fort Story, let alone run 25k on the roads now covered by 6-9 inches of snow. I did, however, venture out for a few miles and slogged through five of them for about 43 minutes. Not used to this type of running though and it was a bit of a struggle and a lot of work for the quads and hamstrings.

It was a good opportunity to try out a test pair of La Sportiva Wildcat GTX Trail Shoes though. To be honest, I’d worn these on a few muddy trail runs in the past and hadn’t been that impressed with the feel — quite bulky, stiff and heavy and not my type of shoe at all. Of course, the shoe is designed for far more rigorous terrain than you’ll find in Virginia Beach, so my opinions are probably not 100% fair to La Sportiva. However, today in the snow, the shoe performed like a champ — the traction was great and thanks to the excellent Gore-Tex membrane, my feet stayed totally dry and warm! Maybe I could get to like these after all?

Sunday: Decided to take a day off. It snowed a bit more overnight and although I *could* have gone out to run, I figured a rest day would probably do me more good in the long term. A rare wise decision by the bulldog, eh?

So, I closed out January with 252 miles and about 51 for the week. Not a bad effort, and the best thing is my legs feel fresh and ready to take on another month.

Happy Miles!

I just did 15 minutes easy followed by 10 minutes @ 5:45 per mile pace with an easy 5 minutes to cool down.

For the record, I ran the “fast” 10 minutes in my Brooks T5s – my shoe of choice for Saturday’s third and final #tweet5k attempt at the Lee’s Friends Run on the Wild Side 5k.
How about this for a picture of Brian Sell’s Brooks T6 shoes shortly after last weekend’s Olympic Marathon in Beijing? Can you imagine what his feet must look like?

According to the interview on Flotrack.org Sell prefers to go sockless in a marathon:

I never wore socks running a marathon. But I never ran a marathon that was this wet before. So, you know, it’s my own fault. I mean, the T6 is a great shoe. You just should wear socks if it’s over 80 degrees or 70 degrees, and you’re dumping water all over yourself all the time.

If you’re wondering about the T6, it’s a brand new shoe from Brooks which will replace the excellent T5 early next year.

I own a pair of the T5′s and can’t imagine running a marathon in them with or without socks! A 10k is about my limit – anything longer and I step up to my favorite shoe, the Racer ST 3 which I’ll be wearing this weekend in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon.

Picked up another pair of Brooks Racer ST3 today – my favorite shoe for the classic marathon distance. I already own two pairs of the lightweight ST3′s, but wanted a new pair for Sunday’s Frederick Marathon which will give me maximum support and maximum cushioning. I know what you’re thinking – never wear brand new shoes in a race (especially a marathon) – but I’m familiar enough with the shoe to know it will be fine right out of the box and shouldn’t cause me any problems in the race. Naturally I’ll try the shoes out “just in case” of course…

Anyway, onto tonight’s run – a five mile slow/fast/slow/fast/slow effort (in my new ST3′s). The wind was still quite blustery today (nothing like yesterday’s tornado conditions of course), but the sun was shining and it was a very pleasant afternoon for a run. First mile was a 7:26 into the wind, which I followed up with a 6:49 also into the wind. The new shoes felt great and will definitely accompany me on my trip to Frederick this weekend.

I decided to slow it down a bit on the third mile (after all my race is on Sunday, not tonight) and recorded a 7:08 split. However, on my way home, with a nice tailwind and spring in my step, I couldn’t help but pick up the pace. The fourth mile was almost marathon pace (6:38) and despite “trying” to slow down for the last leg of the run, I still managed a 6:43 fifth mile.

On reflection, the shoes were wonderful. No hotspots, no blisters and no surprises. Actually the only thing different was the colorway – a lime green and black instead of a bright red and silver. Both are kind of loud but I’m not really bothered what color they are as long as they get me to the finish line in good shape!

My legs are still not feeling 100%, but a few days of taper should take care of that. As Eric just discovered, the taper really messes with your mind and your body, so at this stage I’m not overly concerned about how I’ll feel on race day. Tomorrow sees the start of another Race Day Boost loading cycle, and I guess I won’t be running many more miles this week. I’ll probably run an easy five tomorrow to take my monthly total to 200 and my year-to-date total over the 800 mark, but after that it will just be a few easy miles with a few striders.

Hope everyone’s having a good week. I still haven’t received any guesses for my marathon finish time. Come on, don’t be shy…

PS By the way, my bib# for the marathon is 940 which I’m very happy with. Add up the 9, the 4 and the zero and you get 13 – probably my all time lucky number. Can’t get much better than that can it?

Okay, so it might seem a trivial concern to most of my readers – it’s just a sock after all – but it could be the difference on the day between happy feet and not so happy feet. Naturally I would much rather have happy feet for the 26.2 miles…

Hand-linked seamless toe for seamfree comfort

Specially constructed mesh ventilation panel to keep your feet cool and dry

High tab heel ensures that your liner stays in place, providing for a comfortable fit

Extra-deep heel pocket

Cushioning for impact resistance

They perform really well and although I’ve never had a blister problem, I’ve often wished they were less bulky.

Enter the Balega X-Athlete Hidden Dry – a similar sock to the Hidden Dry with the extra-deep heel pocket and hand-linked seamless toe, but without the cushioning. Sounds just like what I was looking for doesn’t it?

Well, I’ve tried them out on several practice runs and although I think they’d be perfect for distances up to a half-marathon, I’m not going to risk them in Sunday’s marathon. The cushioning could be a great feature in the latter miles, when my legs are tired and I’m feeling every footstep.

As a final test, I even ran a couple of miles on the treadmill tonight. The Hidden Comfort definitely came out on top and I’ll feel better knowing I have that extra protection as I take my place on the start line. Think I’ll save the Hidden Drys for a fast 5k or 10k in the Spring….
